Event Name : National Conference on Climate change and Marine Ecosystem.
Event Date : 20 and 21 of March, 2014.
Venue : School of Engineering CUSAT
Organizers : Department of Marine Biology, CUSAT.
Description
The focal theme of the seminar is ‘Climate Change and Marine Ecosystems’. Ecosystems world over are facing the brunt of climate change impacts and marine ecosystems in particular are facing serious threats. Global warming, increasing CO2 levels and resultant ocean acidification are seriously impacting the marine communities. Frequent occurrences of harmful algal blooms and bleaching of coral reef ecosystems, which are considered rainforests of the sea are reported from many places. Frequent occurrence of extreme weather events as a result of climate change is also impacting the production patterns in the coastal and oceanic environments. While excessive precipitation and land run off is affecting the primary production patterns in the coastal waters, it is the stratification and other forcing that is affecting phytoplankton biomass in the open sea. In this backdrop it is felt that an opportune time has come to take stock of the climate change impacts on marine ecosystems and hence the genesis of the seminar.
Broad theme of the seminar includes impact of climate change on marine biodiversity, climate change and coral reef ecosystems, climate change mitigation strategies, perturbations in the nutrient cycles and production patterns in coastal/oceanic environments, climate change indicators in the marine environment etc. Being a highly interdisciplinary area, any theme which will fall under the main theme areas are also expected to be covered under the seminar.
