Paper revaluation proves a money-spinner for CUSAT

Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has cloaked a record 25 per cent increase in applications for revaluation of answer sheets of various B.Tech examinations since 2008.

The cash-strapped varsity earned a whopping Rs. 2.87 crore as fee for revaluation of B.Tech answer sheets for regular and supplementary examinations held between June 2009 and August 2013.

Interestingly, the combined pass percentage of affiliated engineering colleges was below 45 per cent from 2008-09 to 2010-11.

The university revealed the details of the re-valuation of B.Tech answer sheets in response to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by The Hindu.

In reply to a specific query, the Controller of Examinations admitted that an assistant professor of Model Engineering College at Thrikkakara was de-barred from all examination related activities for two years.

The marks of a candidate had shot up from eight to 45 after revaluation conducted by the teacher.

When a second re-valuation was carried out owing to the considerable difference, the marks went down to three from the earlier eight.

A question on how many students had bettered their performance after revaluation evoked a vague response from the varsity.

The total number of applications for revaluation registered a record 40 per cent increase between 2011 and 2012. In 2011, the varsity received 10,884 applications while it skyrocketed to 15,205 in 2012.

Candidates belonging to the School of Engineering at Thrikkakara; Cochin University College of Engineering at Kuttanad; Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, Aarakunnam; Sarabhai Institute of Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram; College of Engineering, Thalassery, Model Engineering College; College of Engineering, Perumon; College of Engineering, Adoor; College of Engineering, Vadakara were among those that submitted the maximum number of revaluation applications since 2008 as per the official records.
