    A Noble Event For Differently Abled Children

    Cochin University of Science and Technology in association with Kerala Khadi Parchara Samithi organised a much acclaimed philanthropic event today. Various events in the mode of Hindi language were conducted by participating differently abled children. The cash prizes were powered by Acharya Raman Nair Research Foundation. Shri. PG Shankaran, the Pro Vice Chancellor of CUSAT distributed the prizes to the winners and participants.

    CUSAT to Host International Conference IONS Kochi 2017

    International School of Photonics, CUSAT is hosting IONS KOCHI 2017, an International conference funded by The Optical Society (OSA). IONS, International OSA Network of Students is an event which brings together leading scientists, academicians, industrialists, young researchers and students of international community for active discussions and fruitful interactions on various aspects of Quantum Optics and Quantum information.

    IONS is a program which consists of a series of conferences organised by the selected OSA student chapters around the world. The International School of Photonics(ISP) owns a chapter having a strong record of consistently maintaining chapter members. Also ISP has been the co-host of last year’s IONS held at ISM(IIT) Dhanbhad. Hence ISP became an obvious choice for hosting IONS which is also being held at 7 other countries worldwide this year.

    The IONS conference is usually four days of technical presentations from students and esteemed professors, student chapter related activities and social or cultural events.

    IONS KOCHI 2017 held during September 11-14 will be cohosted by IISC Bangalore. The conference will be conducted in the Cochin University Seminar Complex. The Hon. Vice Chancellor of CUSAT Dr. J. Latha will be inaugurating the event on September 11th 2017, 10am. IONS Kochi focuses mainly on quantum optics, quantum computing and non-linear optics.

    Nickel nanoparticle synthesis: CUSAT researchers granted patent

    The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has been granted a patent for the invention of a new method for ‘Nickel Nanoparticle Synthesis’, for a term of 20 years. The patent is in accordance with the provisions of the Patent Act 1970, Government of India.

    Nano magnetic scientist and a UGC-BSR faculty of the Department of Physics M R Anantharaman and former principal of the Government Arts and Science College, Kozhikode E Muhammad Abdul Jamal are the inventors. The invention provides a dry, rather than the conventional wet method, for the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles, which are ‘nickel nano sponges’ with high surface area.


    The practice of ‘targeted drug delivery treatment’ in the medical field is one of the major highlights of this invention, said Anantharaman and Jamal.
    It took four years of strenuous research for this, they said.

    It can be used for manufacturing anode fuel cells, catalytic converter of automobiles, magnetic fluids and Ferro fluids, biomedical equipment, computer, increasing the efficiency of petrol or diesel engines and protective coating on fibres and wires.

    ISRO Chairman lauds CUSAT’s ST Radar

    Isro Chairman A S Kiran Kumar lauded the efforts of the varsity in successfully developing and installing the indigenous 205 MHz Stratosphere -Troposphere (ST) Radar, a first of its kind in the world.

    “ST Radar is of global significance since it has the capability to improve short-term weather forecast and related research,” he said during his visit to the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR) on Wednesday. Kumar said severe weather events such as thunderstorms can be predicted with ample lead time so that fatalities can be avoided.

    He also highlighted the need for sharing radar data in real-time mode through a common platform with academicians, researchers and the public. ISRP Deputy Director C V Anandan, registrar S David Peter, ACRR director K Mohan Kumar, K Vasudevan, Mohanan and K R Santhosh were also present on the occasion.

    CUSAT to act tough on ragging

    Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) will keep a close watch on students involved in ragging on the campus in the new academic year.

    The varsity will step up surveillance at hostels and classrooms as part of its anti-ragging campaign. Special squads will keep a close vigil on any act that comes under the anti-ragging provisions proposed by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

    Moreover, students have to give an undertaking that they will not resort to ragging under any circumstances.

    The heads of departments have been directed to act without delay if ragging incidents come to their notice. The grievance redress samiti on the campus should register complaints and forward them to the police for immediate follow-up action.

    The authorities will give wide publicity to the anti-ragging helpline of the UGC, where students can register complaints in any language.

    Posters and flex boards highlighting the message, ‘say no to ragging’, will be set up at various points on the main campus and at the Cochin University College of Engineering at Kuttanad.

    Hostels for newcomers

    The varsity has also decided to provide three hostels exclusively to newcomers. Besides improving accommodation facilities, the move is expected to bring down incidents of ragging, it is learnt. Special awareness sessions against ragging will be conducted on the campus.

    Legal experts, police officers, faculty members, and students will attend the sessions.

    Meanwhile, the varsity authorities said students could contact the 24×7 UGC anti-ragging helpline (1800-180-5522) or mail [email protected] any incident of ragging.

    Students can also use the anti-ragging mobile app of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to register complaints. The app works on android system. The authorities will take follow-up action on such complaints without delay. The app can be downloaded from Google play store.

    CUSAT fostering radar technology

    The Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research at CUSAT has been dedicated to the nation by Union Minister Harsh Vardhan on July 11.

    The Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), which operates the estimated ₹25-crore Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR), is going global.

    In a major scientific collaboration, ACARR will join hands with the Swedish Institute of Physics, which operates the Moveable Atmospheric Radar for Antarctica (MARA ), a 54 MHz wind-profiler radar. The facility is used during summer expeditions in Antarctica.

    “Our radar is unique as it has around 619 elements that can be used for major research projects. We have plans to use both the radars to study measurements pertaining to atmospheric variations and to conduct research on the profiles of horizontal and vertical winds in both the regions. The main scientific objective is to study the coupling process between high and low latitude regions,” said ACARR Director K. Mohankumar.

    The centre is planning a joint initiative with the University of Kyoto in Japan, which currently operates a middle atmospheric wind profiler radar. The objective of the collaboration is to conduct studies on tropical dynamics.

    Dr. Mohankumar pointed out that ACARR would provide wind profiler data for the validation of the European Space Agency’s Aeolus satellite, which is expected to be launched in another two years.

    Researchers said the radar would play a key role in disaster management in the State. The facility will aid in the timely prediction of severe meteorological events. The State disaster management cell can use the information to augment their efforts during emergencies. Cusat’s radar will provide regional weather forecasts of severe meteorological events like thunderstorms. It will also give inputs for predicting natural disasters of meteorological origin from any other source.

    Meanwhile, work is in progress at the centre on understanding the dynamics of the southwest monsoon this year. Research is also on to utilise the wind profiler observations taken from the radar to enunciate an appropriate matrix for the prediction of the onset of the Indian summer monsoon. The data from the facility are also being used to understand the evolution of tropical thunderstorms that occurred in May this year.

    CUSAT to study groundwater situation at Paravur after Puttingal tragedy

    The Puttingal fire tragedy on April 10, 2016 at the Puttingal Temple in Paravur, Kollam, has inspired CUSAT’s School of Environmental Studies to conduct a study to know the groundwater contamination after the tragedy.

    CUSAT has invited applications for the post of project fellow in the ongoing project titled, “Fireworks accident at Puttingal Devi Temple, Paravur, Kerala on 10 th April 2016, and subsequent groundwater contamination: A Study of Groundwater Quality, Abatement and Mitigation” at School of Environmental Studies, CUSAT. The project fellow will be appointed for a period up to maximum 3 years.

    Anyone who has first class in MSc (Environmental Technology/ Environmental Chemistry/ Analytical Chemistry) can apply before July 12.
    About 111 people were killed and more than 350 were injured, including some with severe burns. The temple and at least 150 houses in the area of the temple were damaged by the blast. According to local reports and eyewitnesses, the explosion and fire were caused by sparks from a firecracker being used in a competitive fireworks display igniting fireworks in a concrete storehouse. The temple did not have permission from Kerala government authorities to conduct a “competitive fireworks display”. About 15,000 pilgrims were visiting the temple to mark local Hindu celebrations during the last day of a seven-day festival of the goddess Bhadrakali.
