A special Syndicate meeting of the Cochin University of Science and Technology has decided to grant promotion to all eligible faculty members within 45 days.
The Syndicate criticised what it termed as the unilateral stand adopted by the university registrar on the issue of promotion of teachers.
The special Syndicate was convened to discuss the issues related to the teachers. The sub-committee appointed to look into their grievances was asked to submit necessary details with regard to their promotion. The controversy surrounding a letter from the Higher Education department on the promotion of Prof. Mathew Cherian of Pulinkunnu Engineering College under CUSAT necessitated the special Syndicate meeting.
The members accused the registrar of giving a unilateral response to the letter and in violation of set precedents.
They felt that the response should have been given after detailed discussions as the matter affected more than 100 teachers. Following this, eight Syndicate members wrote letters demanding a special meeting to discuss the action of the registrar.
The registrar’s attempt to justify his stand also invited strong criticism from Syndicate members.
Steps will be taken to promote all eligible teachers within 45 days based on the AICTE’s pay revision order.

Cochin University of Science and Technology syndicate moves on promotions
KOCHI: At a special meeting convened on Saturday, the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) syndicate decided to start the process of assessing applications of teachers, who are due for promotion, within 45 days as mandated under the career advancement scheme (CAS) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The university’s assessment committee, headed by the vice-chancellor, will assess the applications of teachers from both Cusat as well as faculties from the two self-financing engineering streams.
Sources said that the VC promised to scrutinize all applications within 45 days. Promotions of about 50 to 60 teachers are pending.
“It has been decided that applications for promotions received by the university will be processed for assessment within 45 days. Eligible candidates will be intimated after scrutiny as per existing norms,” said Cusat registrar A Ramachandran.
A dispute had erupted between syndicate members after some of them recommended the promotion of a faculty from the mechanical engineering department, Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad (CUCEK), to the post of professor without following due process. However, university officials, including the vice-chancellor and registrar, contended that the faculty can be promoted only after following due procedure.
Unhappy with the decision, the syndicate members demanded a special session on Saturday to discuss the issue.
At the meeting which lasted less than two hours, the syndicate asked the four-member committee, headed by Lopus Mathew, to study the issue of teachers’ promotion, arrears and other problems concerning teachers at the earliest. “The issue of recruiting new teachers will be taken up at the next syndicate meeting this month,” said a syndicate member.
The syndicate also asked the committee headed by Mathew to study the government’s letter to the university, which has sought clarification on whether the teaching posts in CUCEK have been approved by the government.
“The committee will draft the reply and place it before the syndicate for approval,” sources said.
