RACE 2010- Recent Advances In Civil Engineering – CUSAT 2010

Globalization and extra ordinary technological
advancement that is being made in this centurydemands that Civil Engineering should also keep pace with time. India has set itself the target of becoming a developed nation by 2020.A major focus of the efforts immediately and in the next decade is on infrastructure development. Therefore conceptual analysis, design solutions and new technology must replace traditional materials and technology to meet the requirements of today and tomorrow. Rapid strides made in recent years have significantly contributed to provide solutions for many complex problems in the field of civil engineering. In this context, there is a growing need for dissemination of knowledge amongacademicians, practising engineers and all otherstakeholders. This conference is intended to provide a common platform for this purpose withmain objective to disseminate the recent advances in Civil Engineering.Cochin University of Science and Technology, which is cast in the mould of a federal university and distinctly different from other universities in the state, is a premier science and technology university of the country. While striving to live up to the expectations of the society, the university has spread its wings far and wide to encompass new and emerging frontiers across the academic horizon.
The School of Engineering was started in 1979 at the Cochin University of Science and Technology mainly to focus on Masters programmes for theworking engineers. Doctoral programmes in Civil Engineering wasadded in 1988 and later B.Techcourses in eight disciplines were also introduced. With the addition of M.E. by research and Ph.Dprogrammes in other disciplines, the School of Engineering, with an annual intake of around 600 students, has become one of the largestengineering institutions in Kerala.Research and development activities in Civil Engineering received a boost with the award of several research projects funded by various agencies. The Division of Civil Engineering has successfully completed several major consultancy works and has numerous publications in national and international journals and conferences.
