CUSAT in dire need of proper security

The absence of basic security infrastructure — proper compound wall and manned gates — is troubling Cochin
University of Science and Technology (Cusat). On Tuesday, the university had witnessed clashes between students belonging to Students Federation of India (SFI) and Kerala Students Union (KSU) in which outsiders were also involved.

Clashes had broken out last week during the ‘TalenTime’ event and Tuesday’s incident was a continuation of it, Kalamassery police said.

Police said they have registered cases against four activists of SFI who are not Cusat students. In total, cases have been registered against more than 80 students, including that of KSU and SFI. On Tuesday, police arrested 53 students, who were later released on station bail. Police also registered a case under non-bailable provisions against an SFI activist who pelted Kalamassery police station with stones following the arrest.

The university over the years had tried to control the access of residents who live next to the campus and are using its roads; but, such attempts have been met with stiff opposition so far. Sources said the varsity had completed construction of guard rooms in five locations some time ago but no security staff have been posted.
