Many second year studentsof engineering colleges affil-iated to Cochin Universityof Science and Technology are upset over their just released first year B Tech results. They say the scores they have received in many subjects are embarrassing to them and are forced to apply for either revaluation or improvement exam.Students at a few colleges run by Institute of Human Resource Development (IHRD) said they were
given just pass marks for subjects in which they feltthey had really done well. The inept valuation by unqualified teachers is the reason, say students. They alleged that teachers from Mechanical section are valuating answer sheets of Electrical. “Otherwise this kind of a result won’t have come,” said a student of Chengannur IHRD college.

However, CUSAT con-troller of examinations Dr Philip Kurien refuted the allegations. “We had assigned an examiner to value 35 answer scripts a day and a chief examiner made additional valuation.”

Interestingly, MG University Controller of Examinations Thomas J.Mambra had told  DC last month they were forced to deploy B Tech-holders for valuation. “The deterioration in quality affects the evaluation, so students may not be properly valued.”Students alleged that CUSAT awarded poor marks in order to force them apply for revaluation and extract `300 as application fee for each paper. They said their complaints on the supplementary BTech exams timings  too were falling on deaf ears.
