The Kerala University and Cusat have failed to renew their NAAC accreditations, which lapsed in 2008 and 2011 respectively. Both KU and Cusat are now facing the threat of even losing the UGC recognition as the central regulatory body recently made NAAC accreditation mandatory for all higher educational institutions. Kannur
University is yet to apply for NAAC accreditation. The Kerala Agricultural University is accredited by the Indian Council for Agricultural Research.
B S Jyothikumar, a syndicate member and convener of the finance committee, University of Kerala, said around 50 teaching posts are lying vacant in the varsity. “After the arrival of the UGC circular, we have started filling some of the posts,” he said.
The role of the varsity is to impart education in line with a set of standards. However, the role of universities has shrunk to that of an entity providing salaries and pensions to its employees, Salam said.
