Rs.110 lakh sanctioned by CUSAT physics Department

The department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology has been recognized as the “Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS)” by the UGC in the areas of materials science and theoretical physics.

An amount of Rs 110 lakh has also been sanctioned for equipments and recurring expenditures for the next five years from 2013 to 2018. The UGC sanctioned the ‘Centre for Advanced Studies’ level to the department as it has performed high level research and other academic activities.

Recently, the department received a grant of Rs 1.76 crore under the FIST Program of the Department of Science and Technology considering its academic and research activities in the area of materials science and theoretical physics, said Dr K P Vijayakumar, co-ordinator of the Centre.

The department was getting financial support from the UGC right from 1988 onwards under the Department of Research Scheme (DRS). This was later upgraded to the Departmental Special Assistance (DSA) scheme based on the research output from the Department of Physics.
