Clear BTech backlog before Dec 31: CUSAT

golden chance

Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has decided to give one last chance to the old BTech students to clear their backlog papers.

Students admitted from 1995 onwards can avail of the last chance to pass the course on or before December 31. This follows a written request from a few former students who are now otherwise employed but haven’t completed the course for some reason or other, say university officials.

“They can apply in the old scheme of validation as the new rule does not permit students to have earlier backlogs when they move to higher semesters,” says G Madhu, dean of academics.

He says one of the difficulties for the old students is that they will have to prepare for the exams in the new format which will be different from what they had studied earlier.

According to officials, the number of such students is not likely to exceed 20-30 because most of them have already cleared the papers in the last couple of years.

“Once we start getting the applications, further details will be worked out in consultation with the respective deans,” says controller of examinations A B Bhasi.

Based on the recommendations of AICTE the university has introduced a system in which a student reaching the eighth semester should not have any backlog up to fifth semester under the N-3 formula. The bottomline is that at no point can an engineering student carry forward more than four papers from the previous year. With regular placements, most students try to finish their backlogs within a couple of years of completing the course.
