Three Cochin varsity teachers suspended

Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) syndicate on Friday suspended three teachers, including the head of department of marine geology and geophysics, for allegedly mentally harassing a third-semester student.
The suspended teachers are K Sajan, head of the department, and two assistant professors P Ajayakumar and Nisha N R.

The action on the teachers was taken based on the fact-finding report of inquiry commission constituted by the vice chancellor. The syndicate decided to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter by a woman judicial officer.

According to the complainant, the students were asked to participate in a fest in IIT-Bombay. As the complainant was the only student who had submitted areport after completion of two months internship programme, the student group decided that her project would be submitted for the competition. She submitted an abstract of the report with the permission of the internship guide in Goa but was asked to withdraw the report by Ajayakumar, who allegedly threatened her. But she participated in the debate competition at the event. When she returned, Sajan served her a memo alleging she sent abstract without the permission of the supervising internship guide.

Later, a five-member department council questioned the complainant and harassed her for nearly one-and-a-half hours. Besides she was made to write three internal exams on the same day on last Saturday.
