The Department of Computer Applications along with Free Software community , Cochin University of Science and Technology is conducting a one week Free Software Camp as part of the Software Freedom Day (softwarefreedomday.org) celebrations
Program Details:
Date : 20 – 26 September 2011
Time : 4pm – 6pm
Venue : Department of Ship Technology (Near Department of Electronics and Department of Photonics), Cochin University of Science and Technology
Objectives:
– Spread Free Software Awareness among teachers, students, research scholars, staff of CUSAT.
– Provide basic assistance for Installation and use of Free Software Operating System and application
– Impart basic knowledge on several common Free Software applications used by the academic community.
– Create an environment for knowledge sharing within the university based on the Free Software philosophy
– Bring together all students, faculty, research scholars and staff of the university to create a community under the aegis of CUSAT thereby building a group of people who can become a driving force to spread Free Software and accelerate its adoption in the Society.
Agenda:
The 4 day event will focus on providing knowledge and creating a knowledge sharing environment based on the philosophical and technical aspects of Free Software. Following activites and programs are planned for the four days:
Day 1
20th September, Tuesday
4.15pm – Inaugration
4.30pm – “Free Software , Free Society” – The philosophy of Free Software
5.00pm – OpenOffice.org office suite – Free Software Office Productivity Suite
5.30pm – GIMP.org – GNU Image Manipulation Program, a software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
Day 2
22nd September, Thursday
4.15pm – SCILAB.org – Free Software for numerical computation
5.00pm – WordPress.org Content Management System
5.45pm – Open Session
Day 3
23rd September, Friday
4.15pm – LATEX typesetting Tool
5.00pm – Introduction to the GNU/Linux Command Line. (BASH)
5.45pm – Open Session
Day 4
26th September, Monday
4.15pm – Python.org Programming Primer -Python is a programming language that lets you work more quickly and integrate your systems more effectively.
5.00pm – Contributing to Free Software – Presents a few ideas for users to contribute to the Free Software community.
5.45pm – Concluding Session
Apart from the above sessions a Free Software clinic will be organized at the venue and will focus on the following activities:
– Installation Booth : All students, faculty, staff, research scholars of CUSAT can bring in their laptops, desktops, external hard disk, USB thumb drives for installation of GNU/ Linux at the venue.
– Guidance related to Free Software OS and applications and troubleshooting assistance for common Free Software related problems would be available.
– Tutorials and brief introductory sessions on Free Software applications would be available.
– Free Software Videos would be screened at the venue in between the sessions
