In an initiative aimed at stepping up the pass percentage of B.Tech students, the School of Engineering (SOE) at the Cochin University of Science and Technology has chalked out an action plan that includes remedial classes for weak students and periodical review by the heads of departments of syllabus covered.
The initiative also focuses on enhancing the employability skills of the engineering students.
Elaborating on the project, P. S. Sreejith, Principal of SOE, told The Hindu on Saturday that special classes will be taken for those students who find difficult areas in certain subjects.
“Forms were distributed to the students of all semesters to mention the difficult subjects and certain modules, which they have not understood earlier. These forms were collected from the students and classes to make up the difficult portions will be conducted after the class hours and on Saturdays and Sundays,” he said.
Pointing out that there were students who were weak and could not follow the lessons in regular classes, Dr. Sreejith said that these students were given special classes. “Review of the syllabus covered will be done by the heads of various divisions fortnightly. Faculty members have to be available at their seats/rooms for a minimum of one to two hours daily for active student interactions. The time schedule (showing when they will be available) will be displayed outside the rooms,” he said.
Dr. Sreejith said that the attendance of students is being made more transparent by introduction of the attendance slips, which the faculty members have to mark put in a box. The attendance will be entered weekly at the offices of the division heads and will be displayed weekly or fortnightly so that, rather than at the end of the semester, every one week or two weeks, the student can know about his/her percentage of attendance, he said.
The SOE had already conducted four sessions of two-and-a half hours for the final year students. Dr. Sreejith said that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has conducted a two-day workshop for final year students on resume writing, mock interviews and soft skill development.
