Workshop on Taxonomy of Bivalve Molluscs Description

Phylum Mollusca is the largest group of animals existing today that are distributed in large numbers in marine, estuarine and freshwater habitats. The class Bivalvia in Mollusca is commonly referred to as clams, mussels, cockles, oysters, and scallops. More than 30,000 living species of bivalves have been described from different aquatic systems. Even though records on the taxonomy, distribution and diversity of species are available from different ecosystems, they lack clarity in specific identification characters and descriptions. Moreover species identification especially in the Arabian Sea and associated regions have been inconsistent, such that many ambiguities in bivalve taxonomy remain. The dearth of scientific trained manpower is a serious issue in identifying species. Taking into account this background it was felt necessary by researchers of the Department of Marine Biology,

Microbiology and Biochemistry to collaborate with the National Museum of Wales, UK with the aim of increasing regional capacity in the identification of the bivalve fauna. So the proposed workshop is structured on the following goals and objectives.
