CUSAT student stands 3rd in national contest

A student of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) Statistics Department has bagged the third prize in a national essay competition, held in memory of Indian Statistical Institute founder P C Mahalanobis. Kavitha N Karunakaran, an MSc student from the department, will receive the prize at a function during the ‘Statistical Day Celebrations 2013’ to be held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, on Saturday.

The competition, regarded as one of the leading contests in the field of statistics, is conducted each year by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation under the Central Government. Two topics are given to students to write essay on the spot on either of those.This is the third time in a row that the department has won the prize. “Two of our students, Archana Dilip and Muhammed Anvar, stood 2nd and 3rd in 2011. Another student, Parvathy G Nair, was second in 2012,” said department head K C James.
