CUSAT students continue with #trashtag challenge

On the lines of the global #trashtag challenge, students of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in Ernakulam continue with the challenge to clean up plastic waste from the surroundings of Cusat campus.
The drive was started by a group of 20 students representing all departments, including Cusat School of Engineering, applied economics and instrumentation, on their campus on March 16.

The global #trashtag challenge, that began in the US in 2015, has gone viral this year.

“We have collected waste such as plastic bottles, covers, diapers and sanitary pads dumped on the campus premises by outsiders. The move would encourage other students and colleges to take up the challenge,” said Ramees Rahman M, a research scholar at the department of applied economics at Cusat, who leads the campaign.

The trashtag challenge inspires participants to clean up their surroundings and post pictures before and after cleaning the area.

To collect plastic waste around the campus, gloves, masks and brooms were provided by the university authorities. The students were planning to extend the initiative and have sought the help of Kochi corporation to install trashcans behind the campus, he said.
