CUSAT Riding high on the healthy path

Amid the rising oil prices and growing   air pollution, Cochin University of Science and  Technology has decided to go the green and healthy way. A cycle promotion venture will be launched on the campus next week.

The idea arose during the Monsoon Madness camp  held recently in which about 40 students participated. As the rainfall was intermittent students held discussions on a range of topics. All the students were in favour of promoting cycles like most leading campuses do.

“Cycle is the ideal transport on campus. Cycling answers environmental concerns as well as health concerns. The roads on the campus are cycle -friendly and this is faster and healthier mode of transport. I have started cycling from the university quarters to the campus and use it for visiting the administrative block and other departments. A  few faculty members have shown interest. We plan to launch the venture next week,” said Dr P K Baby, director, Youth Welfare Department.

Students are quite thrilled about the idea and think it would be a good exercise and reach their destinations faster. Most of the hostel students have decided to bring their cycles from home. Many others have plans to buy new ones, girls are gearing up for the venture with many boarders having brought cycles from home.

“It is time-consuming to walk to different sections and the laboratory. Those who have motorbikes use them and a few hitchhike. Cycling is cheap, time-saving and healthy. We plan to associate with the ‘Go Green’ venture  of the School of Management,” said Aswanth M P University Union member. He also said that students are responding positively. All those who attended the camp  would be soon taking to cycling on the campus. He said that even the staff members have expressed interested in the venture.
